With virtual learning, it’s critical to keep the student’s performance level as a constant conversation between the student and instructor from the beginning of a course to the end.
Student understanding, comprehension, engagement, and achievement should add up to more than a simple letter grade on a transcript. Encourage students to set goals for what they’d like to achieve, and have them reflect on these goals routinely. This allows them to measure their own success and gives them the opportunity to self-assess how they’re doing in class.
Ongoing communication throughout a semester about goals, progress, and assessment can help maximize student engagement and drive students to push further in class.
