Proctoring

Frequently Asked Questions

A remote proctoring solution is a technology service designed to ensure the integrity of online exams by monitoring students during test-taking to prevent cheating and academic dishonesty. It replicates the role of an in-person proctor by using software that allows exams to be taken from any location while still maintaining a secure and controlled testing environment. Fisdap assessments use either Proctorio or Respondus as two leading remote proctoring solutions that offer features and capabilities that meet the needs of educational institutions and organizations.

Fisdap uses Proctorio and Respondus to securely proctor assessments. These remote-monitoring platforms use artificial intelligence and facial-detection technology to safeguard testing processes. During assessments, students are monitored via webcam, microphone, and screen. The system will capture things like eye movement, clicks, and sound captured by the microphone, and it will flag anything that may not be allowed. This is done by a machine, so a human is not actively watching the student.

When selecting a remote proctoring service, our system simplifies the decision for you by defaulting to Proctorio. Both Proctorio and Respondus offer robust security measures and provide valuable insights to our assessment security team. If your program has a history with either service, we recommend continuing with your current provider to maintain consistency. It’s important to note that Respondus is the only solution compatible with iPads. Therefore, if your students are using iPads for their assessments, Respondus will be required.

Fisdap continues to recommend in-person proctoring as a best practice. Our new enhanced security is designed to supplement, not replace, live proctors.

The test taker can pause the test for up to five minutes but the test-taking area will still be monitored via webcam and microphone during this time to ensure test integrity protocols are maintained.

Once the allotted five-minute pause has been used, the test will resume, and the timer will begin counting down. Fisdap Test Security will likely inform the proctor, afterwards, if the student is absent from their seat for an extended period of time.

Accommodations may be available to individuals with documented disabilities pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

  • Extra time accommodation: If you have a student that has accommodations for extra time, Program Directors can submit a request to Fisdap support at [email protected]. Please allow 2 business days for us to accommodate this request.
  • Screen readers: Currently, Fisdap exams are not compatible with screen readers. To ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of the examination process, we follow the accommodation guidelines set by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). As an alternative to screen readers, examinees who require assistance due to visual impairments may have a human reader to help them during the exam. This individual can read the questions aloud to the examinee, allowing for an equivalent testing experience.

Examples of what might trigger a flag to Fisdap’s Test Security team are noise/talking, eyes moving off screen consistently, attempting to open an additional webpage, trying to use copy/paste, and someone in the room with the test taker.

The internet speed needed is 0.5 – 1 Mbps. You can test your internet speed using www.speedtest.net.

Google Chrome. Proctorio needs to be installed as a Google Chrome extension. Respondus is compatible with any browser.

No. At this time, exams cannot be taken on mobile devices. Exams need to be taken on a PC, Mac, or Chromebook when using Proctorio. Exams can be taken on an iPad only if the institution chooses Respondus.

A student’s test will not stop if noise is identified on the audio. Our remote proctoring solutions are very efficient at identifying true issues and what could be assumed as background noise. Test Security will only reach out if they believe a test taker was untruthful or a test has been compromised.

If a student is using Proctorio, there is a chat feature in the top, left corner of the screen. This will connect the student with a Proctorio employee who can help mitigate technical issues. This will not connect the student to Fisdap or the instructor. If the Proctorio employee cannot help the student, the student can contact Fisdap support during business hours at [email protected]. Students using Respondus will need to reach out directly to Fisdap support.

A student may have one piece of scratch paper during the exam if the proctor allows. The scratch paper needs to be destroyed after completing the exam.

The institution has agreed to the use of Fisdap’s security software to administer the exam. A student who has issues should address concerns with the institution.

Legal statement:
If your institution or organization has elected to use remote proctoring services during the administration of this exam, or if you have independently purchased access to this exam, by continuing with the exam, you agree to allow Fisdap and remote proctor providers to monitor you by webcam, microphone, browser, desktop, or any other means necessary to uphold Fisdap’s test integrity. This may include recording of video, audio, and/or screen activity, and a scan of your surroundings and computer display. This monitoring will be conducted by machine and/or by a live person. You must remain on-screen and be in total view of the webcam for the entirety of the test outside of scheduled breaks, or your test attempt may be considered invalid. The information from the test session, including recordings, will be available to authorized personnel of Fisdap, remote proctor providers, and may also be provided to the institution or organization with which you are affiliated if they are requiring you to take the proctored Fisdap assessment. Fisdap and its providers will never sell your identifiable information and will only use it for test security purposes.
